The Ministry of utmost corruption

  Arundhati Roy is the most articulate and eloquent voice I know on Gaza. She speaks for me and for humanity.

I have been meaning to read her book and for years and am now in the middle of "The ministry of Utmost Happiness"

I find her hard to read, so my reading is slow. Each page packs the punch of another writer's chapter. The stories are dense and harrowing.


It isn't about Gaza. It is about India and another part of the world that is special for me, Kashmir. 

I have never been there any more than Palestine, but I have seen endless pictures of its stunning lakes and mountains. 

Roy is telling us what my wife keeps telling me, that hell is on earth all over the place, not just in the middle east.

People are vile creatures, many of them and perhaps all of us some of the time.


It is disturbing to hear about the corruption and treachery and violence and torture they we see in Gaza, happening in much the same way in Kashmir.

Yes, there is a hideous bond between Hindu India and Israel. They buy Israeli weapons. They are taught Israeli methods of control and suppression. 


It pains me to see the place which is the source of my adopted philosophy, Kashmir Shaivism, being brutalized in these ways.

The West is not remotely concerned about India. They should be. It has a very powerful economy and is growing faster than China. 

They own our steel and our Rovers.

But the Oligarchs don't want us to know much about how well the former colony does without our control.

Don't read Roy if you want a tranquil life. Read Roy is you want to stare into the face of the suffering and casual destructiveness of our world and its people, and how the human spirit can still find a way though it all.
